I have seen so many blogs about throwing out old makeup. There's this chart, that says when you should chunk makeup based on how old it is.
Umm... how about, no? How about I
like that color?! How about, yeah I know the eyeshadow palette is 7 seasons old, I don't care because it looks
good with my favorite sweater.
Why would I want to throw it out?
Well, the argument goes, it's full of bacteria. Well, let me just say, I use makeup that is almost 10 years old. Yes, you read that right, 10 years. I've been using it as costume makeup for renaissance fairs for 10 years. Its been on the floor of my truck, I've probably dropped it on a muddy field, and it very likely has bacteria on it. Yet, I have had no problems. No breakouts, no redness, no infections.
Am I crazy? Very quite possibly.
But I am in
love with that shade!
But.... here's the catch. I keep an eye on my mascara. Literally. If I smell something funky, if it clumps weird, if it just stops working, I chunk it.
When in doubt, throw it out.
It's possible old makeup could reinfect you with something you had 3 years ago. I think there is research about staphylococcus. But I'm not going to be one of those blogs that panic you and make you throw away all your makeup just so you have to buy all new stuff.
Buy new stuff because you ran out. Buy new stuff because you want a new color. Buy new stuff for a special occasion. But don't buy new stuff because you got scared about old makeup. :D
