Glaedelig Jul

I'm not particularly good at painting my own nails, but I'm trying! What better way to celebrate a Danish Christmas lunch tomorrow than with red and silver nails. Right?

15 Easy Fitness Tips for 2015

15 Easy Fitness Tips for 2015

My New Year resolutions always include fitness. I start strong, keep up exercise during the summer when it’s easy, but by the time I get to the end of the year, I’ve stopped altogether. So, the New Year comes, and it’s time for me to get myself up and moving!

Beauty starts with being healthy. Here are 15 Fitness Tips to get you moving in 2015.
  1. 15 minutes a day. Move for at least 15 minutes every day. Walk, run, bike, do yoga, whatever it is you like best. Do it for at least 15 minutes every single day.
  2. Focus on aerobic exercise for the best workouts. Increasing your heart rate can be done through running, bicycling, dancing or swimming.
  3. Find your max heart rate. 220 – (your age)
  4. 15 jumping jacks can get your heart pumping!
  5. Stretchingcan help you become more flexible.
  6. 15 Sun Salutations every day will help you feel amazing! TRUST ME ON THIS ONE! It will not be easy but it is so worth it. *Basic Sun Salutation steps below*
  7. Park far away from work, school or the store. That extra walk will give you more exercise.
  8. Take the stairs, not the elevator.
  9. Cut out soda, sugar and carb heavy snacks.
  10. Don’t connect fitness goals to weight loss. For example, don’t say “I want to lose 10 pounds.” Instead, make your goal something you enjoy, like “I want to hike my local state park.” Or “I want to run a 5K in June.”
  11. Make it routine. Do the same thing every day for a short burst of time.
  12. Skip the gym. You can exercise at home, or outside. And it’s free!
  13. Or try the gym, if you want to.  See myspecial Curves/AVON offer.
  14. Dress for comfort. Wear sneakers that fit, and loose clothing that lets you move.
  15. Keep it fun! If you are not enjoying the exercise, find something you like because if you aren’t having fun you won’t want to keep doing it.

Basic Sun Salutation
1.       Stand straight, roll your shoulders back and let your hands fall naturally at your sides.
2.       Lift your hands over your head and place your palms together.
3.       Gently bend backward.
4.       Gently and slowly bend forward and try to touch the floor.
5.       Slowly roll your spine up and return to a standing position.

Oooh, Shiny!

I am not very good at painting my own nails. It's unfortunate, really, because I do love wearing nail polish! I'm just not very skilled at it.

So I tried the AVON Metallic Effects nail enamel and decided to top the tips with AVON Dazzlers (available soon) sparkly shiny glittery goodness. The Metallic Effects are super smooth, easy to apply and looked really cool!

And now begins the epic struggle of trying to keep my nail polish ON my nails for longer than 24 hours.

Healing Winter Hands

Winter is here. Well, not technically, as the winter solstice isn't until December 21st. BUT here in New Hampshire, we had a Nor'easter hit over Thanksgiving weekend. Several inches of wet, heavy snow. Great for making a snowman but otherwise miserable.

My hands hurt.

Cold winter air makes my hands red, dry, cracked and chapped. It's painful.

I have tried many things to help soothe my winter hands. Aveeno works but isn't intensive enough.St. Ives Intensive Healing lotion has worked ok for me. Strangely enough, natural goat milk healing lotion has actually made my skin feel like it is on fire. Vaseline is just gross.

AVON Moisture Therapy Intensive Healing hand cream is wonderful. The lotion helps alleviate the burning and dryness without being too greasy. It also has emollients like jojoba to help skin regain oil lost through exposure to dry cold air. I seriously struggle with this dry hands issue. I also wash my hands a lot which doesn't help.

https://www.avon.com/product/52362/moisture-therapy-intensive-healing-repair-holiday-mini-hand-cream/?_PDP&repId=16309386

So, I'm curious. What does everyone else do to quench the burn of dry skin during the winter?!

Hang Nails

I have awful cuticles.

Terrible, painful cuticles that catch on things. It's frustrating. They rip, they bleed. And they do not look beautiful. I have tried so many things to heal my cuticles: cuticle cutter, cuticle pusher, lanolin, solar oil, cuticle cream...I even use my teeth to try to solve hang nails. I long for something that will help ease my cuticle drama!

Don't Cut!
Apparently, you aren't supposed to cut your cuticles. The cuticles protect the nail bed and help keep bacteria out. Cutting them can increase the chance of infection. So the better choice is to use an orange stick and gently push the cuticle back.

More Moisture
Cuticles are still skin, and skin needs to be moisturized. Greasy creams on my fingernails annoy me, so I do a treatment with oil and then I use my hand lotion and work some into the nails and cuticles.

Skip The Polish
I love nail polish, BUT after I treat my nails and cuticles, there is no way I am getting that nail polish to stick. I wait a bit before attempting to apply nail polish because all that oil and cream just kicks the polish right off!

Feeling Beautiful Equals Feeling Happy, Healthy and Positive

I don't FEEL beautiful today.

I'm exhausted. My headache has returned with a vengeance. And my family has expectations for me that I'm struggling to meet. I just don't feel beautiful.

And that's OK! We don't have to feel beautiful every single waking moment. But we do need to take steps to start feeling beautiful again. In my mind, feeling beautiful equals feeling happy, healthy and positive. It's more than looking beautiful when you go out. It's about feeling GREAT about yourself.

Maybe I need a spa day. No, I definitely need a spa day. Unfortunately, I just cannot afford the time or the expense right now. Check back with me about how you can create your own spa day at home with a small budget! So I'm going to try to take a hot shower, and somehow get back into mommy mode for the weekend.

In the meantime, since it is 19° outside, I am going to dream of relaxing in a rainforest with my Amazonian Treasures.

Unrealistic Expectations

We all have expectations for ourselves. Those expectations depend on our past experiences, our exposure to media, our cultural and family influences, and how we view the world and our place in it.

Most beauty expectations are unrealistic. There, I've said it.

Skin care is important. Wearing makeup is a choice. And general, healthy body care helps us stay healthy, make sure people are not turned off by our odor, and ward off vampires. OK, maybe not the vampire thing, but you get what I'm saying, right? Body care helps us stay clean and smelling good. We wear clothing and jewelry to express ourselves. All of that is great.

The problem comes from having expectations we simply cannot achieve. Many of us have seen the evidence: the Dove evolution commercial, the before and afters of celebrities, and the obviously Photoshopped bodies of models. Yet, our expectations for our self, for our own body is so unachievable, it's sad. While I could probably do a whole Ted talk on the idea of unrealistic beauty expectations and body self acceptance, I will give this one singular piece of advice for now.

Learn to love the skin you are in. Decorate it. Adorn it. Nourish it. But love the you that you are.

I Love My Liquid

For a very long time I struggled with the skin tones on my face. I have (and have always had) a lot of red tones on my face. I flush easily and have a "ruddy" complexion. When I was younger that went oh so well with my stick straight blonde hair, big nose and freckles. BUT I've learned to love my face and I'm not even afraid to share it without makeup, like I do in this tutorial.

I didn't even start using liquid foundation until my 30s. Seriously, what was I thinking?! I usually used just moisturizer and a loose powder... Now I love my liquid!

This video is different ways that I personally apply liquid foundation. This is the first time I have used the AVON MagiX (Magic-X? Magicks? How do you say it?) and I have to say, it is smoother and softer than any other foundations I've used, from Cover Girl to Studio Gear.

Get the tools I use here:
MagiX cashmere advanced liquid foundation (available in many shades)
foundation brush
groovy black and pink makeup sponges

Put Your Best Face Forward

Did you know?!

Experts in the medical field, like dermatologists, say that these common practices will help you obtain or maintain healthy skin on your beautiful face.
  • Gentle cleansing every day. Creamy cleanser for dry skin or foaming cleanser for oily skin, using cool or lukewarm water. http://avon4.me/1ukkHa5
  • Moisturize your face. Lightweight, oil free moisturizer applied while the skin is still damp. http://avon4.me/1xvDpfV
  • Sunscreen. Wear moisturizer with SPF every day, all year long.
  • Exfoliate. Once a week will help remove dead skin cells. http://avon4.me/1EqWOii

When In Doubt, Throw It Out!

I have seen so many blogs about throwing out old makeup. There's this chart, that says when you should chunk makeup based on how old it is.

Umm... how about, no? How about I like that color?! How about, yeah I know the eyeshadow palette is 7 seasons old, I don't care because it looks good with my favorite sweater.

Why would I want to throw it out?

Well, the argument goes, it's full of bacteria. Well, let me just say, I use makeup that is almost 10 years old. Yes, you read that right, 10 years. I've been using it as costume makeup for renaissance fairs for 10 years. Its been on the floor of my truck, I've probably dropped it on a muddy field, and it very likely has bacteria on it. Yet, I have had no problems. No breakouts, no redness, no infections.

Am I crazy? Very quite possibly.

But I am in love with that shade!

But.... here's the catch. I keep an eye on my mascara. Literally. If I smell something funky, if it clumps weird, if it just stops working, I chunk it.

When in doubt, throw it out.

It's possible old makeup could reinfect you with something you had 3 years ago. I think there is research about staphylococcus. But I'm not going to be one of those blogs that panic you and make you throw away all your makeup just so you have to buy all new stuff.

Buy new stuff because you ran out. Buy new stuff because you want a new color. Buy new stuff for a special occasion. But don't buy new stuff because you got scared about old makeup. :D

What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Do you look in your mirror? Do you even have a mirror? I used to not have ANY mirrors. I hated mirrors. I didn't want to look in the mirror, because I just didn't want to see myself. I didn't want to know what I looked like to the world.

What makes you think I don’t own a mirror? Every face that ever looks at me tells me that I’m ugly. But every time I make them laugh, I get to show them what beauty really is.
 ~ Jarod Kintz

I have believed I had flaws.
  • My nose is too big.
  • My lips are too thin.
  • I have... FRECKLES!
At many times during my life, there were other factors that made me avoid mirrors. Life just wasn't going good. Bad things happened. Work, relationships, whatever... thing... interfered with me finding beauty in my looking glass. But things got better. And those things got better when I felt better about ME.

It's not easy, this self evaluation in the mirror thing. It's downright HARD. And painful. Excruciatingly painful. We are taught to look for the flaws. We are conditioned to find the thing that is wrong.

http://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/374879/what-do-you-see-when-you-look-in-the-mirror/

Look in your mirror. Find one word to describe what you see.

The beauty in MY looking glass is..... self-confidence.

What is the beauty in yours?
