AVON Empowerment

Part of my mission as an Avon Lady is to empower women. My goals are to:
  1. Help women find or develop individual beauty through beautiful Avon products,
  2. Help women be empowered to begin their own beauty business if they choose, and
  3. Contribute to the fight against domestic violence.
For Campaign 6, I will be focusing only on launching my first Speak Out campaign. Then, I will continue to support local domestic violence resources, reach out to help women in need of personal empowerment, and continue to promote Avon’s Speak Out program.

The Avon Foundation has Speak Out Against Domestic Violence Programs that directly contribute to helping victims of domestic violence. To that end, they offer empowerment products and a portion of the sale of those products goes toward the Speak Out programs.

DIY Spa Day

I could use a relaxing spa day EVERY day. The fact is, I can barely manage some spa treatment time for me every few months. If I'm lucky. And the planets align.

When I do have an opportunity for relaxing spa time, you bet your pretty petunias I'm going to take advantage of that! My problem is, there is no way I could afford GOING to a spa. I mean a facial alone can be well over $100. There is most definitely a way I can recreate the spa experience myself and for much less.

Be prepared to spend some time alone, bathing and pampering yourself!

Spa Treatment Products I Recommend

Face

Brightening Facial: A facial mask will invigorate and hydrate your face, bringing back a healthy glow and helping you relax and recover from stress. Clearskin® Pore Penetrating Black Mineral Mask $6.99 OR Planet Spa Amazonian Treasures Hydrating Face Mask with Brazilian Acai and Berries $10
Spa Cost: $100+

Facial Hair Treatment: Remove unwanted facial hair with a cream or a wax. Skin So Soft Fresh & Smooth Moisturizing Facial Hair Removal Cream $6 OR  Skin So Soft Fresh & Smooth Moisturizing Facial Wax Strip Kit $12
Spa Cost: $15-$30+

Body

Exfoliate: Use a body scrub to exfoliate skin, and refresh your body. Planet Spa Perfectly Purifying With Dead Sea Minerals Body Scrub $12
Spa Cost: $50+

Moisturize: Enrich and restore your skin with a soothing moisturizer, like a body lotion or oil. Skin So Soft body lotions and oils - so many solutions and scents to choose from! $5 to $15
Spa Cost: $50+

Hands

Manicure: File your nails, care for your cuticles and polish with a trendy color. Nailwear Pro+ Nail Enamel $6
Spa Cost: $25+

Moisturize: Massage a lotion into the dry skin on your fingers and hands. My personal favorite! Moisture Therapy Intensive Healing & Repair Hand Cream $5
Spa Cost: $10+

Feet

Pedicure: Trim your toenails, and color them with a made to last gel polish. Gel Finish 7-in-1 Nail Enamel $7
Spa Cost: $35+

Smooth: Rub in a hydrating foot cream. Foot Works Beautiful Deep Moisturizing Cream $5 &
Spa Cost: $20+

Total cost for all of that pampering at a spa? Starting at $320, and could be much more depending on the spa!

Total cost if you do it in the comfort of your home? $75, and you can use the same products again next time you need a spa day! Check out my DIY Spa Day Pinterest board.

Help My Peeling Nails

My nails have always had problems. They rip, tear, chip, break, and peel off in layers. It's disturbing. And can be quite painful!

So, in lieu of a pretty pretty manicure, I am on a calcium diet. Well, yes, drinking my milk, for sure. I am also applying a nail treatment to my nails to help them recover from this brutal winter.

I got this at a dollar store, and I've been applying it to my nails every day. It has calcium and green tea! Yum.

Secrets of 1970s Glam

The Fall/Winter 2015 runways seem to be filled with 1970s + "fill in the blank". The 70s revival hybrid trend is bringing back looks like deep plunge necklines, geometric prints, and high waisted long length pants.

So what are the secrets of 1970s glamour? It's an "adorable illusion" as Blondie said... but we don't have to pull out our satin rompers to be on trend with this look.

Makeup looks can be natural, feminine and glamorous.
  • Natural: starts with skin care, bronzed cheeks
  • Feminine: soft colors, shimmer
  • Glamorous: defined lids, winged lashes

 Shop the entire look!
“This look is all about classic 70’s glamour. It is inspired by the rich color and luxurious decadance of the collection.” Lauren Andersen, Avon Global Celebrity Makeup Artisthttps://www.avon.com/product/53418/fashion-week-2015-70s-glam?_PDP&repId=16309386
Now if AVON would bring back some other groovy 70s items! Some vintage AVON items I remember from my childhood (70s but also some of the 80s): the wrist writer, color change lipstick, and all those adorable fragrance bottles.

Stressed? Take A Bath!

I'm not joking.

Do you feel stressed? How do you know if you are stressed? Life has a way of making too many demands of us. The result is that we feel stress, which can have pretty harmful effects!

Am I Stressed?

Dealing with every day life can make us feel pressured, moody, worrisome, anxious, irritable, depressed, achy, sick or nervous. The way we react to stressors can be mental, emotional, physical or in the way we act. Stress overload can push us to a breaking point.

In a cruel, ironic twist of fate, my life has been going fairly smoothly, yet today something extraordinarily stressful happened. I am shaky, teary, sad, and definitely feeling fight or flight instincts. Stress happens because things in life happen. So, yes, I am very much stressed!

How Do You Cope With Stress?

It depends on the type of stressors in your life. Certain jobs people have result in more complex things to deal with, for example. Events occur that can create acute or sustained stress. The degree to which you are personally able to deal with stress can also determine how you cope. I feel stress mostly through muscle tension, which can lead to severe headaches.

If you feel like you are strained to the point of mental or physical exhaustion, you need some stress relief!
  • Take time for yourself. I'm a working mom. Time for myself is sort of an oxymoron. You have to actively seek moments to relax. Go for a short walk outdoors. Find a relaxing hobby. Have conversations with your personal support network.
  • Get rid of the stressors. Clear away negative people and situations as much as you  can. Set realistic goals and cross a few things off your to do list. Eliminate the source of your stress.
  • Change what you can and ignore what you can't. Sometimes things can't be changed. If you work in ER, the trauma will continue to walk through the door. If you can't change your job, find a way to be at peace with what you do. You cannot control certain things!
  • Try meditation and aromatherapy. Find a quiet space where you can be alone. Breathe deeply and visualize the stress going away. Certain aromas can be calming and will help to melt stress away. Scents such as peppermint, lavender, jasmine, geranium and chamomile are known for their pleasant and stress relieving odors.
Coping with the pressures of life is hard. there is no doubt about that! But to ensure stress doesn't take over your life, you have to actively week ways to manage it.

In fact, just taking the time to have a luxurious bath can help reduce stress by improving circulation, relaxing muscles, enabling the use of aromatherapy, and allowing for personal meditation.

Herbs For Cooking

My garden is currently buried under 2 feet of snow. Fresh herbs are one thing I am looking forward to once the snow melts and the days begin to get warmer!

Fresh herbs can be grown easily indoors or in a garden, and they are wonderful, simple additions to everyday cooking. In the winter, I use dried herbs I harvested the previous autumn.

These essential herbs add great complexity to meals!

Chop your fresh herbs easily with this great herb chopper.

The Most Disgusting Blog Post Ever

It's Valentine's Day, so of course I want time alone. (Hey, I'm a working mom!) So, husband and little go off on an adventure, and I have time to pamper myself. I never have time for pampering. Ladies, take time to be beautiful and pamper yourself! You'll feel so much better when you do.

My feet have not seen the sun in at least 3 months, and they are certainly complaining about it! My tootsies needed a little TLC.

I have some serious calluses happening. Thankfully, I had purchased Foot Works Pedi Peel for my husband's feet! (You definitely don't want to see those!). With glycolic acid and aloe, the Pedi Peel really went to work on my feet.

And I apologize for the disgusting picture of my toes.

Things I Learned in Texas

I lived in Texas for 10 years. The reason that got me there is complicated, and the reason that brought me back is currently almost 4 years old.

I made friends, lost friends, made more friends and cried when I left. I honestly consider it "home" even though I was raised in New York and also lived in New England.

There are some fairly dramatic things I learned in Texas, and I'd like to share those with you:

  • People matter, and people come first. The Northeast is always so rushed and people don't seem to always want to put other people first. I made friendships and connections in Texas. I laughed, they laughed (at me, likely) but it was about PEOPLE. Human relationships are the most important thing.
  • Animals are awesome! Growing up I saw a few animals in person, but the animals in Texas are way cool! From armadillos to snakes to fire ants to longhorns... oh my, the list just keeps going. Plus, I visited several zoos from here to there and back and got to see even more animals that were downright amazing. (Pandas, anyone?)
  • Plants are awesome, too! Bluebonnets, prickly pear cactus, butterfly bush, tepin peppers... all very cool.
  • Heck, rocks are awesome as well. Travertine. That's all I'm saying.
  • How to apply makeup. Pretty much everything I know about makeup, nails, and skin care, I learned in Texas. Let's just say I went the grunge route in college and leave it at that. In Texas, I learned all about Ulta and Sally Beauty, and how to make your makeup stay, despite the heat.
  • Makeup melts. Who knew, right? Yeah, around the 100 degree mark, makeup starts melting and dripping. Yuck. Even yuckier when it's on your face.
  • Adversity can be overcome. It's hard, and challenging, and it sucks. But when you are faced with adversity, you are quite capable of pulling up your bootstraps and getting over it. Honest.
  • It's ok to be sweet AND sassy! Texas women, in particular, have this uncanny ability to be able to smile at you while plotting against you. Call it "apple pie with arsenic", call it "...the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip." (Winston Churchill said the second one). However you want to say it, it is an amazing ability.
  • Live music in small venues is the best concert experience ever. I've done the huge ampitheater venues, and outside concerts, and the best music events I have been to are in Austin, Texas. You can see, meet, talk to, and possibly even touch, the musicians. It's incredible.
  • Food can be incredible. It was in Texas where I acquired a taste for: sushi, raw oysters, Thai, Indian, brisket, crayfish boil, queso flameado, and hamburgers the size of, well, Texas. Yeah, I missed pizza and bagels, but it's just pizza and bagels. Nothing compares to a well prepared tortilla soup!
  • Margaritas are good only when they are done right. I never thought I would say that, because I frequently never even ordered a margarita when I went out, but when I did, they tasted delicious. I, regrettably, cannot find a well mixed margarita north of the Mason-Dixon line.
  • Men can be amazing. Suffice it to say that my immediate experience with men right before I moved to Texas was less than. I met a handful of truly amazing men in Texas that I owe a great deal of gratitude to. Their honor towards women, respect, ability to communicate and the things they took the time to teach me is something I hold dear. Thank you.
  • All women are beautiful. It's strange, but before I lived in Texas, I never thought much about how women perceive themselves and other women. Many of the women I knew when I was younger just seemed really unhappy about who they were, and I can count on one hand the number of adult women in my young life who were confident enough to be inspiring to me. When I got to Texas, I slowly learned that every single wonderful woman I met was beautiful. I could seriously write an entire book of vignettes highlighting women I met in my 10 years in Texas, and how each one of them have such an amazing personality, vibrant view on life, incredible backstory, the confidence to hold feminine heads up high, and the strength to persevere through some truly awful life experiences. Some of my Texas friends, if you are reading this, I'm thinking of you! <3 Don't make me tag you! (cause I will)

The Eyes Have It

My eyes are definitely my most favorite facial feature. I love wearing my eye makeup everyday! This is an easy way to make your eyes pop, but still look natural and not overly makeup-y.

I use concealer under my eyes. Always. Extra Lasting Concealer

For the eyeshadow, I use my finger to drag color from the inside corner of my eyelid to the outside. Sometimes, I use several layers to make the color really stand out. I use an eyeshadow brush loaded with color to make a more accurate line just above my top eyelashes. Unless I rub my eyes, this color lasts all day! True Color Quad Eyeshadow in Purple Haze

Then I line the bottoms of my eyes with pencil eyeliner, and try to waterline to make it look more natural. Glimmersticks Eye Liner in Blackest Black

No eyeliner on top, and no mascara.

Love Your Face

Wearing foundation, concealer, blush and/or bronzer can create the perfect canvas for any highlighting makeup you do, but it also serves powerful makeup duty if it's the only makeup you wear!

Foundation can even skin tone, blend out flaws, and it can prevent environmental damage such as UV sun rays if it contains SPF.

When choosing foundation, select a color or shade that is as close to your natural skin tone as possible.

Concealer shades should be a little lighter than your natural skin tone.

If you need guidance choosing the best shade for your skin, contact me!

What's In My Order?

AVON truly does have something for everyone! Women, men, kids... there are so many great products to choose from and so many products you actually need and use! Shocking, isn't it?

So, here is what's in my order this week:

1. Glimmersticks.  4 for $10. This is an AMAZING sale for eyeliner! If you use eyeliner, this is the best time to stock up.
https://www.avon.com/search/glimmersticks?cel_id=glimmerstick|T_glimmersticks
2. Bubble bath in Lavender Garden and Soft Pink.  I have a preschooler so of course I need to buy stock in bubble bath to keep up. We never have enough, and the lowest price I have been able to find locally is a generic Johnson's version at the dollar store and even then it gets used up so fast I feel like I have to buy it every other day. You can get deals from the 2 previous campaigns, so I went back one campaign to get these at 2 for $9.99. (Go to youravon.com/cheriefrid, and click on "Quick Item Entry". Then you can choose which campaign brochure, and enter the item # manually). That is 48 ounces of bubbly goodness. (It might last 2 weeks.)

3. Foot Brush.  This one is for my husband who really struggles with feet issues. He's been asking for a pumice stone for EVER!
https://www.avon.com/product/51691/double-sided-foot-brush?_PDP&repId=16309386

4. Eyeshadow Quad in Glow Teal. A splurge for me; I love love love eyeshadow! More, please!
https://www.avon.com/product/48854/true-color-eyeshadow-quad?_PDP&repId=16309386

5. Nailwear Pro + in Sunshine. Because there is over 2 feet of snow outside and it's still coming down. I need some sunshine. (Not the color pictured, btw)
